If you had told a younger version of me that I would be homeschooling my kids, I would've laughed! My husband and I were both public schooled K-12 and both had great experiences. We never had any intention of homeschooling our kids.
As I look back, I realize that God was leading us in small ways to where we are now. It was a little at a time and now with two years of homeschooling under our belts, I can vividly see that God led us here and we are so grateful for that!
So how DID we end up homeschooling? The first time I remember the topic coming up was when our oldest was less than a year old. We had just eaten dinner with family members where their kids had shared some pretty negative experiences they were having in public school. On the way home, we were talking about it and homeschooling our kids briefly came up. It was merely a thought and didn't come up again.
Fast forward two years later when our oldest started preschool and we ended up getting an at-home preschool curriculum. I made a little school spot in our kitchen with a bookshelf, calendar, and white board. Every day, we did a simple activity together and we both absolutely LOVED it. I fell in love with the one-on-one time I had with her and seeing her so eager to learn.
As we neared the end of that year of preschool, I grabbed a workbook from the dollar store for additional learning practice. My daughter loved it so much and begged every day to do a couple of pages. She had learned her letters and their sounds and wanted something more. There was a homeschool curriculum that I had heard great things about and ended up ordering the kindergarten prep course. My daughter took off with it and asked to do it every day.
At this point, we knew we wanted to homeschool. We began to research- we read books, blogs, and articles. We listened to podcasts, watched YouTube videos, and talked to veteran homeschoolers. The more we learned about it, we quickly realized that the benefits of home education were what our family needed. We knew this was the path God wanted for our family. So we decided to dive in and the rest is history!
If you are feeling the same pull to homeschool that we were, this post would be helpful! Feel free to message me any time with questions or concerns- it's so important to have someone to talk to during this journey!
