How to Start Homeschooling

So you've decided to homeschool...now what?

It can be overwhelming when beginning to know where to start. When we decided to homeschool, I didn't know where to start either. There's so much information and resources and it can feel really intimidating. Here's five steps to start homeschooling!

1. Find out YOUR why! Each family homeschools for different reasons. Sit down and figure out why you want to homeschool. Why are you choosing this for your family? What's your drive? What's your goal? Why is this important to you? It's a good idea to have your reasons written down so you can refer to them on the hard days and know that you're doing the right thing.

2. Research. Start reading homeschool books, blogs, listen to podcasts, watch YouTube videos, and talk to those friends or neighbors you know that homeschool. Ask questions and learn for yourself what the benefits are.

3. Figure out your state's laws. Every state has different requirements for homeschooling. Go to hslda.org and select your state to see a specific list.

4. Create your vision. What do you want to focus on? What are the priorities in your homeschool? What do you want your day to look like? And note that these can and will change as you experiment and find out what works best for your family.

5. Find a curriculum. There are SOO many options out there! Do research to find what will work best for your family and for each child. We use The Good and the Beautiful and I would highly recommend using them if you are starting out! I can personally say that homeschooling wasn't nearly as daunting with their curriculum.
