Around the World: Thailand

This school year we are doing an Around the World study. I am not using any curriculum, I am creating my own, so I have been planning it out for months and have been itching to start. It has been a blast so far!

I have chosen a few countries to study on each continent (except Antarctica) and have chosen a few topics for each country to dive into. We have been spending a week studying each country. I plan on doing a blog post after we finish each continent to share activities we did, books we read, and links.

This week we wrapped up the continent of Asia after learning about China, India, and Thailand.

Thailand was so fun! To introduce it, we first found it on our map. My girls have loved this felt map that we have hanging in our school room and get so excited to see what picture they get to stick on.

We read a couple of non-fiction books on Thailand to learn some basic facts about the food, people, language, and geography. Then we colored the Thai flag and country outline to add to our narration notebooks.

We read about Thailand in DK Countries of the World and read about a boy that lives in Thailand from DK Children Just Like Me. We have also been using DK A School Like Mine to read about what schooling is like in different countries.

The topics I picked for Thailand were Songkran, Thai fruits, and elephants.

Thailand is known for their large variety of exotic fruits. Unfortunately, we don't have most of them here in the United States. But I did find a few! We tried coconut, mangoes, and rambutan.

My husband used a hammer to crack the coconut in our backyard and the girls loved touching and smelling it. They did not like the taste though!

Surprisingly, they did like the rambutan. It is a very unique fruit. The outside is spiny and looks like a sea urchin. The flesh of the fruit is white and looks like a small egg. The texture reminded me of a grape. And there is a small pit in the flesh.

Songkran is a Thai holiday held in April. It's basically a nation-wide water fight! We read about it and did a few water activities in our backyard.

For elephants, my five year old and I used a tutorial from Art for Kids Hub to draw them. To involve my toddler, they stamped their toy elephant's feet into playdough.

We also read a lot of fun elephant themed stories. Cinderelephant was a favorite!

Thailand is a beautiful country and we had fun learning what makes it so special!
